Online reputation management or sometimes referred to SEO reputation management is a way of controlling how your name appears on search engine results. A guy contacted me yesterday and he said that his name has appeared on one of the Wiki Leaks websites. The problem for him is that when people search his name, one of the results comes up relating to these wiki leaks and he feels that it's harming his reputation.
The first thing that my client asked me is if I have any connections at Google and I can just phone them and tell them to get his name off the Google results. Obviously, I said no, Google won't just do that. What I told him is that we can do online reputation management.
When a person searches this guy's name, the result would relating to Wikileaks comes up quite high on the Google results. Now again, we can't remove the results, but the aim is to push that result lower and lower and lower down the search results, ideally even to page 2 or 3. Now in order to push those results further and further down, you need to put results on top of that negative result.
There's a number of ways that one can do it. The first one that you can do is make sure that you have social media. Generally, Google will show the top results for most people's names like on LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, YouTube and a few others.
The second Thing is you might want a personal website. You can do positive P R as well. There's a whole variety of different options.
Now, for this client that I mentioned, I don't think it's gonna be that hard. It might take time, but really we just want to push one result further down. But in certain circumstances, it's almost impossible.
A few years back, I had a guy that called me and he wanted to try clean his name on Google. But when I searched it,
umstances, it's almost impossible. A few years back, I had a guy that called me and he wanted to try clean his name on Google. But when I searched it, there wasn't one result.
There were about 30 results. This guy really was a dodgy guy. And I told him, look, bro, I'm not judging you.
It's got nothing to do with me. But in your circumstance, it's almost impossible to clean your name.
